Book & Lyrics by Ali Viterbi

Music & Lyrics by Toby Singer

Based on an original concept by Toby Singer

In 1940s Budapest, two Jewish figures rose to prominence. One was Hannah Senesh. The second was Rudolf Kastner. Yet of the two, Senesh is the only to enter the Jewish people’s pantheon of heroes. History remembers Kastner as a villain, while it lauds Senesh as one of its greatest heroes. But really: when we look back into the dark, what story will we tell? So asks the opening lyric of Budapest, Budapest, which tells the unknown story of Rudolf Kastner and asks: What is the cost of redemption? What does it mean to be a hero?

IN EVERY GENERATION

MFA Playwrights’ Workshop

July 27-August 4

The Kennedy Center | National New Play Network | Washington, D.C.

By Ali Viterbi

Directed by Howard Shalwitz

Dramaturged by Gabrielle Hoyt

One family. One holiday. Four millennia. The Levi-Katz family celebrates Passover again and again (and again and again) and while times, location, and languages change, traditions stay the same. Over matzah ball soup and (vegan) brisket, the close-knit clan contends with questions of race, religion, and inter-generational trauma. The present echoes the past—and the past the present—as the family repeatedly reenacts the exodus from Egypt, each time asking themselves: must we define ourselves through trauma? Will we ever be free? And why is this night different from all other nights?

New York, NY

Ali is proud and humbled that her play Deadheads received its first workshop in New York with Lyra Theater Company, directed by Noam Shapiro and featuring Bonnie Antosh as Sadie and Ross Hamman as Ethan. Through an immersive rehearsal process, Ali had the privilege of collaborating with these generous, talented, and thoughtful actors to make changes to her script in anticipation of its upcoming reading in Alaska (Last Frontier Theatre Conference 2016) and international premiere production in Australia (The Owl and Cat Theatre, Melbourne). More exciting Deadheads announcements to come!
