11th Annual Women of Valor

June 13 @ 7:30pm and June 23 @ 2pm

San Diego REP | San Diego, CA

By Ali Viterbi, Todd Salovey, Leah Salovey, Sarah Price-Keating, and Rebecca Myers

Directed by Ali Viterbi

A woman of valor, who shall find? The Lipinsky Family San Diego Jewish Art Festival’s centerpiece each year has honored and profiled remarkable women and pillars of the San Diego Jewish community. In every Woman of Valor, we tell stories of strength and inspiration to create a portrait of the resilience of our community. In a time of isolation, we feel that these stories are more essential than ever.

This year, each Woman of Valor will be highlighted in one of six video episodes, premiering online at 7:30 PM on June 11, 14, 16, 18, 21 and 23 on San Diego Repertory Theatre’s YouTube Channel and Facebook Page. The videos will remain available to view online after they premiere.

Eileen Wingard’s article in the San Diego Jewish World: “Ali Viterbi Play Hits Hot Button Issues”

“Playwright Ali Viterbi , judging by In Every Generation, is a fresh young voice with much to say… [The play] touches upon intergenerational expectations, care for aging parents, divorce, intermarriage, homosexuality, interracial adoption, sibling rivalry, and tensions over religious practice. All are deftly woven into an engaging tapestry, beginning with a three generational family celebrating a Passover seder in the present… The large audience and standing ovation reflected the strong, positive reaction to the excellent presentation.”

IN EVERY GENERATION

June 6 at 7:30pm

San Diego Repertory Theatre | Lipinsky Family San Diego Jewish Arts Festival

By Ali Viterbi

Directed by Todd Salovey

One family. One holiday. Four millennia. The Levi-Katz family celebrates Passover again and again (and again and again) and while times, location, and languages change, traditions stay the same. Over matzah ball soup and (vegan) brisket, the close-knit clan contends with questions of race, religion, and inter-generational trauma. The present echoes the past—and the past the present—as the family repeatedly reenacts the exodus from Egypt, each time asking themselves: must we define ourselves through trauma? Will we ever be free? And why is this night different from all other nights?

Eva Trieger’s article in the San Diego Jewish World: “Viterbi’s IN EVERY GENERATION debates Jewish Questions”

“…The dialogue is tender and honest, and the fact that the readers learned so much Italian and Hebrew is most impressive!..This is quite an accomplishment for a writer so young. The show’s focus on miracles and inquiry makes for an interesting dichotomy. Luckily, as Jews, we’re allowed to question. I left the theater with several questions and few answers. However, I think that in order to seek resolution, I will have to look to our past, evaluate the present, and speculate about the future.  I think that’s what Ali Viterbi had in mind when she wrote this provocative script.”
